Salary Range: $65,948 – $75,444 Depending on Experience

Position Summary
The Director of Transportation is responsible for all transportation leadership and management functions with the focus of
providing students and passengers with efficient and safe transportation.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
● Provide daily direction to a staff of over 50; bus drivers, mechanics and support employees
● Recruit, recommend for employment and evaluate transportation department personnel
● With the assistance of the Human Resources Dept., administer the labor agreement, including disciplinary actions
● Manage the transfer of data between PolyPlot and PowerSchool to continually update student demographics and
transportation information
● Oversee the processing of payroll
● Direct the compilation of data for annual expenditure and school bus inventory reports
● Create and supervise the system for communicating transportation information to parents including bus stops, bus
times and changes throughout the year
● Oversee the collection and analysis of data to provide bell schedule recommendations to the Board of Education
● Oversee and provide direction to the Mechanic staff
● Establish a school bus replacement schedule making determination for replacement or procurement of additional
buses
● Maintain membership and actively participate in county and state pupil transportation organizations
● Keep current, knowledge of all laws and regulations pertaining to pupil transportation
● Keep current on technology, school bus parts and equipment trends
● Keep current on all local road construction projects impacting Caledonia Community Schools bus routes in and
around the district. Communicate information to district staff as appropriate.
● Conduct accident investigations and supervise accident reporting to appropriate law enforcement and insurance
agencies
● Evaluate safety of road conditions during inclement weather and provide timely recommendation to the Executive
Director of Operations and Transportation for school closings.
● Assist in the communication school closing information to media outlets and staff. Performs other duties and
assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Executive Director of Operations and
Transportation

With Transportation Office Staff:
● Develop and implement educational programs for Transportation staff throughout the year
● Develop and implement programs for schools, open houses, back-to-school events, and the like throughout the
year
● Establish locations of school bus stops, construct bus routes and daily transportation schedules for general and
special education students
● Respond to concerns from parents and school administrators regarding all aspects of Pupil Transportation
● Work effectively with building principals and program administrators regarding transfers, school of choice,
homeless and other special case students
● Oversee the scheduling of Field Trips, Athletic Events and other activities requiring transportation services;
ensuring timely arrivals
● Manage the district’s digital mapping; ensuring that addressing and new developments are updated
● Establish locations of school bus stops and construct bus routes for students in all Summer School programs and
communicate transportation and program information to all Summer School participants
● Establish and maintain an efficient way to identify participating students daily to ensure they arrive at their
appropriate program
● Develop school bus and school bus parts and equipment specifications which meet the needs of the district and
fully comply with state and federal regulations
Employment Qualifications
● EDUCATION: This position requires knowledge equivalent to that, which normally would be acquired through the
completion of an associates or bachelor’s degree. Related experience may be substituted for educational
requirements.
● CERTIFICATION, LICENSING: CDL License with all appropriate endorsements. MSBO CTD Certification. State
of Michigan health, bus driver and transportation supervisor certifications.
● EXPERIENCE: A minimum of five to seven years of progressively more responsible or expansive experience in
pupil transportation.
● Experience managing a pupil Transportation system including development of school bus routes, time schedules,
dispatching, maintenance, and field trip assignments required
● Demonstrated knowledge and experience with a computerized routing program and other software material used
to assist in the efficiency of a pupil transportation operation required
● Demonstrated excellent customer service skills required
● Experience attending seminars to refresh skills in managing Transportation Departments preferred
● Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills and have the ability to interact cooperatively with
the community, staff and students required
● Experience in maintaining an effective school bus vehicle maintenance and replacement program required
● Experience in promoting safety programs for the safe transportation of school children required
● Experience in formulating and monitoring a transportation budget and capital outlay program required.
