Position Description

 

For more than 80 years, Kuyper College has been guided by the ethos of the current mission – “to equip students with a biblical, Reformed worldview to serve effectively Christ’s church and His world.” As the chief academic officer, the Academic Dean of Kuyper College assumes a key leadership role in safeguarding, promoting, and nurturing the College’s mission and heritage of preparing students for lives of service and ministry.

The Academic Dean of Kuyper College fills a non-tenure, academic faculty position and reports directly to the President, advising the President on all matters pertaining to the faculty and the academic programs of the College and serving on the President’s Leadership Team. The Academic Dean supervises the faculty, and personnel within the Academic Office, Library Services, and Academic Support, and represents the College’s academic programs with accreditation agencies.

The successful Academic Dean candidate will embody the role of leader, mentor, and visionary, ensuring a culture of faithful teaching and learning, engaging scholarship, and humble service. Additionally, the Academic Dean will provide collaborative and effective oversight of all academic programs and pursue innovative initiatives and continuous improvement that will further the College’s mission in the years to come. The successful Academic Dean candidate will exhibit a vibrant personal faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, displaying a Christ-centered servant leadership that integrates faith and work. Critical to this is a demonstrated ability to articulate and promote a biblical, Reformed perspective in higher education. This includes a commitment to the Kuyper College Doctrinal Statement and the Statement of Allegiance.

Desired Qualities and Characteristics  A genuine love for God and others within the context of Christian higher education  An earned PhD or equivalent  A minimum of five years of executive administrative experience in higher education  Experience in teaching and scholarship at the post-secondary level  Knowledge of, appreciation for, and an ability to articulate and integrate a Reformed worldview into academic programs  Demonstrated innovation, leadership, mentoring and communication skills  Strengths as a visionary with gifts in implementation, planning and collaboration  Interpersonal skills – the ability to relate well with others and to develop collegiality  Intellectual curiosity – demonstrating a wide variety of interests  Skills and experience in academic program planning, administration, budgeting, research and data assessment, delegation and supervision

Position Description Duties and Responsibilities  Serve as a member of the President’s Leadership Team and as the chief administrative officer of the College in the President’s absence  Serve as a full member of the College faculty  Provide support for, and accountability to, the Board of Trustees and its Programs Committee  Serve as a college representative while collaborating, networking, and communicating with both internal and external constituents and partners  Promote the mission and programs of Kuyper College in the public arena  Assist in the development, monitoring, and accountability to the College’s strategic priorities  Identify, cultivate, and support opportunities for faculty development and scholarship  Oversee the recruitment, retention, evaluation and promotion of faculty  Provide leadership and support for the personnel within the academic office, academic support office, and library services  Lead the development, assessment, evaluation, and accreditation of academic programs  Develop and manage budgets  Serve as the chair of the Academic Affairs Committee  Other duties as assigned

The search for the next Academic Dean of Kuyper College is being led by a committee of faculty and staff from across the College. The committee’s task is to review and screen the applicants through written materials, interviews, recommendations, and reference checks. In addition to selected candidates being interviewed by the Search Committee and other members of the Leadership Team, the final interview will be conducted by the Board of Trustees upon the recommendation of the President.

The search will remain open until the position is filled. Ideally, a final candidate will be presented to the Board of Trustees at their spring 2021 meeting. The approved Academic Dean candidate will assume this position on July 1, 2021.
