Kingdom Coming Down | Track Two

Written by Andrew Ferris ©2007

sing hallelujah to the king
sing hallelujah to our God
let it be known among the nations that he is good
sing hallelujah to the king
sing hallelujah to our God
let it be known among the heavens that he is good

and ever since the dawn of time - your loving kindness has called out
and ever since we turned away – you have been calling us home

so let your kingdom come – our hearts are calling out loud
for you, in mercy and love, to turn the curse back around
your voice awakens the soul - that overflows with the sound
of heaven crashing into earth as your kingdom’s coming down

forever will the tales be told - forever will the songs be sung
of our relentless loving God - of our victorious risen one
and so forever you will reign - and you forever will be praised
and as the heirs of this great love - so forever we will

sing hallelujah to the king of kings and lord of lords
who was and is and is to reign forever, and ever

The Story Behind the Tune

A note from Andy Ferris
The original title of this song was “generic worship song” and it was written backwards.  It started with the final chorus of “sing hallelujah to the king of kings…” and sat as a little 4 measure tune for about 2 years looking for something else to go with it.

The problem was that it was so broad and basic, everything went with it.  It was during The Story series in the fall of 2006 that I was captured by the idea of the bigness of God’s kingdom. The lyric that came out was “ever since the dawn of time…” from there, this song began to make sense. I wanted to celebrate the God who began this epic story a long time ago, as well as give a voice to people to cry out with longing for the completion of the greatest story ever told.

A note from Chris Walker
So, Ferris showed me this tune and I really connected with the chorus.  As we started the recording process, I told him that we needed to put the song together because I really enjoyed the chorus section, to which he responded “oh thanks, but I changed the chorus yesterday.”  Miffed, but optimistic, I asked him to show me the new one.  It was really good too, but for different reasons.  I told him I’d have to get used to it, but it was cool.

So, just about the time I’m falling in love with the second version, we began pre-production on the tune.  “I forgot to tell you” Ferris said.  “I changed that chorus; it just wasn’t working.”  I told him to quit messing with my emotions.  But he was right, this third chorus is the one that the song needed.

The original chorus still stuck with me, and it actually became “No Other Voice”, a standalone chorus on this disc that finds its way into the mix musically and lyrically throughout the tracks.  So in all honesty, it’s a double victory.  We get two, two, two choruses in one!

By the way, I love the way Katie sings this song.  It’s right in the part of her range where she has to yell.  And it’s exactly what the song needs.

Can you imagine if everyone in our church yelled this chorus together from the tips of their toes?  We’d blow the roof off the place!

We should try it…I think we have good insurance.
