father we’ve come to this place where we receive your perfect gifts
so that we might now in turn offer them back to you
father let us now breathe deep in the breath you fully give
and we’ll let it out again as a whisper of praise
and we have come to seek a new life - a life that is full
and we have come to offer this life in fullness back to you
A note from Andy Ferris
This is me trying to write a hymn. I guess I’m too much of a pop artist since all my hymns turn out as pop songs. Oh well. Still a pretty tune!
I love the irony found in 1 Chronicles 29.4 that everything we give to God was God’s to begin with. Hence the circular thinking: Christ asks for our lives (heart, soul mind and strength) and He promises to give us an abundant life. I love the idea that we get to give that life back to Him.
A note from Chris Walker
C.S. Lewis has a famous analogy of a father giving his child some money so the child could by his dad a gift. The father is “sixpence none the richer” because he basically bought his own gift. But the father sees so much more value in the process of allowing the child to give.
I think the simplicity of Andy’s melody carries this lyrical idea so well. Our ability to give comes from the Father in the first place, but he provides for us so that we can give back to him.
Great song. Brilliant God.
